Thoroughbred Market Report
In 1978 Bill Oppenheim founded the twice-monthly newsletter known as Racing Update. During the 1980’s Racing Update became known as an independent voice, as it accepted no advertising, just subscriptions, and regularly engaged in commentary and predictions regarding the racing and breeding industry. After selling Racing Update in 1993, Bill wrote for the Thoroughbred Daily News and The Blood-Horse from 2000-2020.
Inspired by the original concept of Racing Update, in 2021 Oppenheim and his business partner Dr. Emily Plant launched the new Thoroughbred Market Report, a monthly electronic magazine which covers major Thoroughbred sales around the world, offering insightful analysis and commentary to add context to an increasingly complex and global marketplace.
In addition to the global sales reporting, Thoroughbred Market Report is now the only place you can find Bill’s signature Annual Progeny Earnings IndeX (APEX statistics, a system he and his team at Racing Update devised in the 1980’s as an enhancement of the average-earnings index. APEX measures the frequency with which a stallion produces runners to reach certain earnings thresholds, with A Runners the top 2%, B Runners the next 2%, and C Runners the next 4% of runners. APEX has proven over the years to be a reliable and unique method of assessing stallion performance both in terms of assessing the overall quality of any given sire, but also identifying undervalued stallions.
A subscription to Thoroughbred Market Report includes our monthly electronic magazine and full access to the Billoppenheim.com website, where you’ll find the latest news and information, APEX data, an archive of Bill’s past columns as well as archived Weekly Sales Tickers and its successor, the Worldwide Sales Tracker.
