What Are APEX Ratings?
APEX stands for Annual Progeny Earnings Index. It improves on the Average Earnings Index (AEI) by eliminating distortions from outliers.
How APEX Ratings Work
Unlike AEI, APEX focuses on the frequency of top-performing runners. It classifies them into:
- A Runners: Top 2% of earners
- B Runners: Next 2%
- C Runners: Next 4%
- ABC Runners: Combined top 8%
This creates a balanced, accurate view of sire performance.
Key Differences from AEI
-
Seven-Year Data Window:
Highlights current success and filters out sires past their prime. -
Commercial Focus:
Excludes sires with fewer than 10 foals per crop, ensuring real-world relevance. -
No Freshman Ratings:
Ratings only apply once sires have had 3-year-old runners.
Why APEX Ratings Matter
APEX Ratings provide the clearest picture of sire success by focusing on consistent high performance. A powerful tool for informed breeding and buying decisions, available only in the Thoroughbred Market Report.
